About Norman Thomas
Norman Thomas, the founder of Thomas Painting & Decorating began painting in 1973 while in high school and continued through the 1980’s. In 1981 he enrolled in Utah Technical College to begin a 3 year apprenticeship program. Skills learned among others were fine furniture finishes, color matching, OSHA safety procedures and wallcovering techniques. He was rewarded with his journeyman certificate with the Utah Apprenticeship Council in late 1982. If you’re doing the math, yes, it doesn’t add up. He was credit with an early completion due to work experience.
While painting on Temple Square, in Salt Lake City in the 1980’s, he became skilled in old world European style wood graining, gilding and marbleizing by carefully observing older skilled craftsmen who immigrated from Denmark, Sweden, and Germany after WWII. By 1985, he was doing what they had done with the manipulation of glazes and special effect paints. Not until 10 years later did the phrase ‘Faux Finishing’ become commonplace in the paint and decorating industry.
In 1987 Norm founded Thomas Painting & Decorating. For the past 30 years, Thomas Painting has completed numerous painting projects from high-end custom homes, commercial and institutional establishments, office remodels, medical clinics, manufacturing facilities, temples, church sanctuaries and school district projects.
Like Forrest Gump, Norm is, “getting pretty tired”, but still involved in day-to-day operations. He has taken his 44 years’ experience and trained a core group of dependable, trusted and skilled craftsmen to carry on the work. We would love to apply our skills to help you with your project.
